Michigan officials warn of potential scams with upcoming auto insurance refunds – CBS Detroit

(CBS Detroit) — The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) warns consumers of potential scams related to upcoming refund checks issued by the state’s Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA).

This comes a month after it was announced that Michigan drivers would receive $400 per vehicle as a result of a $5 billion surplus in the MCCA fund. Officials said the the analysis of the association has determined thatabout $3 billion of that surplus is repaid.

In November, Governor Gretchen Whitmer called for refunds, which MCCA unanimously approved a few days later.

“Whenever there is widespread distribution of money to consumers, there will inevitably be bad actors who try to abuse the situation to steal personal information or money from consumers,” said DIFS director Anita Fox. “Your refund check or ACH deposit comes directly from your insurer and you don’t need to take any action to receive it. Never give personal information to a caller who claims to be from your insurance company.”

The money will be transferred by MCCA to insurers by March 9, 2022 at the latest. Companies are then instructed to provide the refunds to consumers via check or ACH deposit by May 9, 2022.

Refunds will be made to policyholders for any vehicle insured as of October 31, 2021 at 11:59 PM under a policy that meets the minimum insurance requirements for operating a vehicle on Michigan roads.

Officials say if you are approached by someone claiming to be an MCCA representative, your auto insurance company, or other official, you should end communication and contact your insurer directly.

Consumers who have questions or concerns that cannot be resolved directly with their insurer may contact DIFS by calling 833-ASK-DIFS (833-275-3437) Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm, or by emailing autoinsurance@michigan.gov.
