SCAM ALERT: Beware of Tricks Related to Michigan Auto Insurance Refunds

LANSING, Michigan (WLNS) – The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is warning Michiganders to be aware of scammers who could abuse the recent announcement that Michigan drivers will receive refunds from the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA) . .)

“Whenever there is widespread distribution of money to consumers, there will inevitably be bad actors who try to abuse the situation to steal consumers’ personal information or money,” DIFS Director Anita Fox said in a press release. “Your refund check or ACH deposit comes directly from your insurer and you don’t need to take any action to receive it. Never give personal information to a caller who claims to be from your insurance company.”

The MCCA announced in December that auto insurance policyholders in Michigan will receive $400 per vehicle if insured under a policy that meets the minimum insurance requirements for operating a vehicle on Michigan roads beginning October 31, 2021 at 23 :59 hours.

DIFS cautions that if you are approached by anyone claiming to be a representative of the MCCA, your auto insurance company, or other officer, you should end communication with the person contacting you and contact your auto insurer directly.

Michiganders who have questions or concerns that cannot be resolved directly with their insurer should contact DIFS by calling 833-ASK-DIFS (833-275-3437) Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. by emailing autoinsurance@michigan.gov.

To learn more about MCCA refunds, DIFS has launched a consumer FAQ page at Michigan.gov/MCCArefund. The webpage contains important information and answers frequently asked questions about the refund timeline, eligibility requirements, and tells consumers what to do if they have questions or concerns about their refunds.
